Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was founded in 1855. CHOP has changed many lives. Before the hospital was opened, most childhood illnesses were treated at home because infants and children admitted to adult hospitals often died of cross infection or neglect. CHOP was the first hospital in our nation for children. Children's hospital is dedicated to finding cures and treating illnesses and injures specific for children.
When Children's Hospital first opened there was 12 beds and a dispensary, and the physicians served 67 patients and 306 clinic patients. In June 1974, the hospital moved all its equipment and patients to its current location at 34Th street and civic center boulevard in West Philadelphia. Over the years, CHOP added the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia research instituted. This was one of the largest pediatric research facilities in the United States.
