Newborn babies that are put in the nicu (neonatal intensive care unit) are usually premature, have low birth weight (less than 5 pounds) or have medical conditions. 12 percent of the babies in the United States are born premature and low birth weight. twins and other multiples are often admitted to the nicu. Babies with heart problems, infections, or birth defects are also put in the neonatal intensive care unit. About 9 percent of newborns are required care in the nicu.
